This is political grandstanding. She did the bulk of tax increased via sales & payroll. She applauds herself for thoughtful "efficiencies" but proposed damaging cuts to programs serving DC's most vulnerable, early educators, & schools. The sacrifice was not shared. 1/

.@DCFPI=😀to see 💰for the reparations task force in the budget - but, we must ensure reparations are funded thru equitable revenue raisers (read: taxing wealth), not fines/fees & the sales tax, which disproportionately harm Black residents w/low incomes. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/…

New via @DCFPI: The Council's FY 2025 makes progress on the mayor's proposal, but the Council can and must do more to raise revenue equitably in order to meet the moment. dcfpi.org/all/dc-council…

Additional revenue can go toward investing in housing & #homelessness. We need more vouchers so that ppl experiencing chronic homelessness can get life-saving housing. &, we must fund rental assistance so ppl can keep a roof over their heads. 🧵5/5

Before finalizing the FY 2025 budget, DC Council should vastly improve the property tax proposal & consider raising taxes on incomes above $500K, limiting itemized deductions, & taxing capital gains at a higher rate than income from work. 🧵4/5

Under the Council's plan, a household w/a $2.6M home would pay only $150/yr in additional property taxes - or, the cost of a meal +🍹for two at a nice DC restaurant. We can do better, & raise millions of $$$ by⬆️property taxes for homes w/a taxable assessed value over $1.5M🧵3/5

DC under-taxes wealth & income, & the Council's property tax proposal is too modest to meet the moment, raising only $5.7M in FY 2025. 🧵2/5

.@TazraMitchell: By forcing the Mayor to replenish reserves more quickly than what DC law requires, the CFO blew a $253.6M hole in the FY25 budget - which is already expected to include deep cuts to address a $900 million gap. 🤯 dcfpi.org/all/cfo-overre…
