@scienceisnotfun @Revkin @ThomasPRoland Same with the bacteria, are they multi-thousand year old colonies or did they hitch a ride from elsewhere?

Green area of the Antarctic PENINSULA has risen from 1 to 12 square kilometers. "The area of likely vegetation cover increased from 0.863 km2 in 1986 to 11.947 km2 in 2021." Great climate science but worth a reality check when the news featured on Google News is "Antarctica is greening". #realityisbadenough

@scienceisnotfun @Revkin @ThomasPRoland Is there a nutrient limiting condition to contain this algae growth?
Where are the nutrients on the top of glaciers coming in from? Are they blown atop or are they being freed from the thaw?
English
@Thimble27968308 @Revkin @ThomasPRoland Short answer to q1, most likely yes. I expect some positive melt feedback loop is happening

@scienceisnotfun @Revkin @ThomasPRoland One of the things I would like to know is whether these algae colonies on the top of glacier slush pools are providing a feedback effect where the more algae you have, the less albedo, the more slush for algae to move into...

@Revkin @ThomasPRoland @scienceisnotfun was one of the lead authors of that research and has been mapping the greening of Antarctica as shown here:

So yes Antarctica is a large white place, but the conditions on the surface of Antarctica are increasingly green.
