Sometimes Silicon Valley companies do things that make me cry inside. One, a big company that everyone here knows laid off a large number of its R&D engineers and didn't pay any severance, or anything. Just said "your last day is today, goodbye." Corporations can be so cruel sometimes. I won't share the name, the guy who told me this is trying to find a job and doesn't want to destroy those efforts to work with other people, but this is horrible behavior. I know it happens all the time, but what happened to "treat people the way I'd like to be treated?" Makes me feel blessed that @Broadcom did the opposite when it laid off my wife, went the complete other direction. Which is why I will recommend Broadcom to people who ask "should I take a job there?"

@JustEatUK @CraigDavid Just got completely wrong order (it was someone else's), and now just eat won't let the restaurant send us the correct food, instead apparently I have to apply for compensation (which could take days, if ever) and order and pay for it all again! What a terrible experience.

@davewiner I did try this by using a lot of metadata to get AI to interpret plain English questions into structures that could be used in Sql. Unfortunately the hallucination problem was huge and unfixable. I'll give it another go in a few years; for now, heuristics work better than AI

A new paper in Nature found that you cannot, in fact, train AIs on AI-generated data and expect them to continue improving. What happens is actually that the model collapses and ends up producing nonsense.

Let me be very fucking clear. Labour could pass a law to either immediately adopt a fair & proportional voting system, or hold a referendum on it... in an afternoon. Blair procrastinated on PR, and it never happened. Anyone saying "not now" is standing in the way of democracy.

What can I feed a child who's ALWAYS hungry for a snack (though probably also bored), won't eat a big meal, and shouts at me if I suggest fruit or veg (though does have some of both every day)? NB I do not have the time/energy to faff about making food into fun shapes, faces etc!
