My friend Tony Drewry aka @beerpedaler was nice enough to share this dynamite photo that he took of the great Butch Hancock as Butch played his harmonica at the Tolbert Chili Cookoff in Terlingua last month. Butch, who is perhaps the greatest songwriter in the history of Texas, was onstage and Tony was standing at the back of the crowd with his 400mm lens when he got this. What an evocative portrait! Thanks, Tony! This. Is. Awesome.

Blanche Barrow, who was a member of Bonnie and Clyde's gang, at the moment she was captured in August, 1933. Blanche was the only member of the gang to survive their exploits, dying in 1988. She weighed only 81 pounds when she was captured. When you read the whole story of Bonnie and Clyde, it's apparent that Blanche was more or less a victim of circumstance and a devoted wife to Buck Barrow, Clyde's brother, than some sort of hard-boiled criminal.

An anonymous Traces of Texas reader thoughtfully shared this nifty photo of a Roseate Spoonbill in flight near the rookery at High Island, Texas. These birds were hunted very nearly to extinction in the early 1900s because their plumage was so valued by ladies for their hats. But a series of protective measures in the 1930s and 40s stopped the hunting and the population of Spoonbills has rebounded, though loss of habitat is a worry. I see these birds and I always think they look so primitive, so ancient. WHAT A GORGEOUS SHOT!
