Falkland, Fife, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Deep in the hills of Fife below the Lomond Hills, Falkland is another one of Scotland's properly preserved spots that feels like stepping back in time. This conservation village clusters around a grand Renaissance palace with quaint streets, flower-filled cottages and a peaceful, quiet atmosphere that makes it really special. The Falkland Palace itself was built mainly by James IV and James V between the early 1500s and 1541 as a royal hunting retreat and pleasure palace. It became a favourite of Mary Queen of Scots, who loved to hunt, hawk and play tennis here - there’s still one of the oldest surviving royal tennis courts in the world in the grounds, dating from 1539. The palace blends French-inspired Renaissance architecture with beautiful interiors, painted ceilings and a lovely Chapel Royal. You can wander the formal gardens and historic orchard, which come alive with colour in spring and summer, or simply stroll the village streets and soak up the charm. It’s all very approachable and serene, with that lovely mix of royal history and everyday village life.

Calgary Bay, Isle of Mull, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Calgary Bay on the northwest coast of Mull has a beautiful stretch of white sand and bright turquoise sea, with low hills rising right behind it. Surrounding the beach are colourful wildflower meadows, the kind you only see along the west coast. You can park at the small car park just above the bay and wander down the short path to the sand. At the beach, you can walk along the soft sand or have a paddle in the clear water and just enjoy the views. It’s one of the prettiest beaches on Mull and always feels like a proper little find.
