People who are generally on my side of the debate about how the US should deal with China seem very confident that China will resist the temptation to play stupid geopolitical games, on the ground that it lacks America's missionary zeal, but I have to say that I don't believe that for a second unfortunately. It's not that I disagree that China is more indifferent than the US to how other countries organize themselves politically, I often complain about liberal imperialism and I too have read John Fairbank, I know about the tributary system, yada yada yada, but I don't think that stuff is as relevant as many people seem to think. I know it's fashionable to dunk on realism these days, but old-school realists were right that great powers are to a large extent driven by considerations of prestige and honor, which I think makes it pretty much inevitable that China will eventually start wasting money on the same kind of dubious military and foreign policy ventures as the US. The Chinese also have a huge chip on their shoulder due to the "century of humiliation" discourse. It won't be like the Cold War, because the ideological aspect is mostly lacking and China is fully integrated into the capitalist global economy, but I don't understand why people trust Chinese wisdom so much. They are human, which means they are retarded.
