@Ghj45263917 @gregheffley87 I disagree with the second point. Mateo Retegui was born in Argentina with one Italian-born grandparent and he has become Italy's starting striker over the last 3 years. They will pick whoever strengthens the team.

@scout_aussie @gregheffley87 Yeah he is defintely taleneted i just cant see him getting more than 1 or 2 caps in pointless friendlies, if theres another player of equal ability thats born in italy they will get the oppurtunity

These comments seem to put a full stop on the possibility of Cristian Volpato (2003) representing Australia. For Australia, it's a big shame - he is a very talented player, born and raised in Australia, who would be level-raising for the Socceroos. It is a decision, however, which deserves respect. He never represented Australia at youth level and has not changed his convictions on a whim. And on the basis of his performance today vs. Juventus - you would have to say he has every chance of representing Italy - which would be a huge achievement which I'm sure would give his family a huge amount of pride.

🚨🎙️ | Cristian Volpato: 🗣️ "I spoke to the coach (Popovic). They've been wanting to call me to Australia for a few years, but I grew up watching the Azzurri, even the coach, and I'm waiting for Italy, then we'll see how the rest goes."

@Ghj45263917 @gregheffley87 Agreed. It will be tough. But I think he has the ability. He has been stuck behind Berardi at Sassuolo for 2 years - having signed for the club when it seemed like Berardi might be leaving. In today’s game, he completely outperformed Berardi.

@scout_aussie @gregheffley87 But he has beradi, orsolini, chiesa all in his position ahead of him and a 1 or 2 more who will still be around the national team for the next 4- 5 years

@scout_aussie If he wants to play for Italy, let him. Same with Segecic. If he is still performing down the track and wants to play for Australia, keep that door open, but it'll be on our terms We've done the same capping players from other countries before

It's really disappointing for me too. I've been following his progress for more than 5 years. I remember when he became a regular in Roma's U18s and first made it onto the Primavera bench. I watched him play for Sassuolo early today and felt reinforced in my view that he is just about the best Australian player right now and would raise the level of the Socceroos for the next 10 years. But ultimately it's his decision, and the decision he's making is not opportunistic. He has worked extremely hard for many, many years to be able to make a decision like this. I wish him all the best and I hope he achieves his dream of representing Italy.

@scout_aussie a rational response to this when naturally a lot of passionate aussies are very upset by this. It really hurts but the reality is there, he never has actually represented us and has stuck true to his word. Gutted but it is what it is

@AliG040803 I don't think it should follow any strict rule, but rather provide a national team tournament experience to those who would benefit from it in the long term.

@osaussiesadam Agreed, and that's a positive thing after many years of regression and decline.

Kalan Alagich (2010) made his debut for Adelaide United's senior NPL team earlier this month. He's only the second 2010-born player to play a top-tier NPL game nationally. Left-footed midfielder who attacks the game and can beat players and create chances. One to watch.

It's worth noting that Australian football has progressed to a point where there are regular starters in the Championship, MLS, Eredivisie and J1 who cannot make the Socceroos squad. Three years ago, players in those leagues would almost be guaranteed Socceroos starters.

@DanielGarb Can't see anyone starting ahead of him at right-back with Miller out, to be honest. He's really had an excellent season. Been Grazer's best player by such a distance that you'd think he's almost nailed on to get a move.

It's interesting to compare Sydney FC u13 training to the famous Guardiola demonstration from 2007 (below). Both coaches talk about 'pass and move' or 'give-and-go', but the framing/interpretations are very different. Neither is right nor wrong, nor mutually exclusive.

@fingerj86 True. In Europe and Latin America, it's completely normal that there are smaller clubs who attract small crowds. I think because we are used to franchise, salary-capped leagues we are more conditioned to think that all clubs should get strong crowds.

FIFA has announced an official ASEAN Cup, starting in September this year. Australia should participate, potentially with an 'Australia A' side. It would be an excellent opportunity to introduce players to the national team set-up.

@Sachk0 His two volleys were probably the two best goals scored by an Australian anywhere in the world this season too.

Unforgettable night for Jacob Italiano, who watches on as fans chant his name. The Aussie full-back scored his first professional hat-trick for Grazer AK in the Austrian Bundesliga. He’d only managed one goal in 46 previous apps for the club. Back in the Socceroos squad too.
