I got my first client after 1-2 months of learning web design. At that time, I used Wix Studio to create websites. My first gig was building a landing page with a 3-language feature for $500. I got this client from a colleague, she knew someone who needed a website and referred them to me. This first client then gave me a referral to someone they knew. It's all about connections. I worked with foreign companies from the start.
If you’re just starting out, here are some of my pieces of advice:
1. Tell all the people you know that you changed your career and what services you offer. You never know, someone your colleagues know might need your services.
2. Approach small businesses around you, offer cheap or even free websites to build your portfolio. They can refer you next time. Small businesses have their own communities, and you can grow your reputation one step at a time.
3. Use freelance platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, etc. It didn't work for me at the time and I didn’t like it because the cuts are big while project fees are small. But I’ve heard many freelancers make good money there, so you can try.
