Conclusion. In most cases, GPT Image-2 is the stronger model when it comes to the overall realism and vibe of the image. The outputs are visually stronger, especially in colors, skin tones, camera angles, and the “casual iPhone photo” look, which is a requirement in our system prompt. However, the details are not always as strong as Nano Banana-2, specifically when it comes to creating believable interiors. We also noticed a chin/jaw artifact in many of the GPT outputs. Both models clearly fail at rendering realistic laptops. We think there’s a strong chance to mitigate all, or at least most, of these failure modes through stronger system prompts, and we’ll share more details soon.

5 - a lifestyle laptop picture This comparison clearly shows the strength of GPT Image-2, as well as a weakness of both models. The overall frame: GPT clearly won on colors and realism. Nano Banana’s image looks more “stock photo polished” rather than a casual image taken on an iPhone. The place where both models failed is the laptop. Both failed on the keyboard button labels, position, and size. GPT produced a slightly better toolbar.

4 - an elevator selfie with an attached AI actor. Both models produced very similar outputs in skin tone, pose, and camera angle. However, in this case we prefer the GPT output for the following reason: > Facial expressions and overall "vibe" > Tattoo. While the person in the reference selfie had a tattoo on their arm, the attached actor didn't. Both models were instructed to “follow the reference, but replace the identity fully with attached Actor”, which should also imply the tattoos. GPT correctly captured that intent. > Bracelet: GPT correctly captured the bracelet from the reference image, while Nano Banana completely replaced it with a different one.

3 - Portrait with a wall poster and an attached AI actor GPT Image-2 better captured the pose, camera angle, and mirror details. Skin quality looked strong in both outputs, although we slightly preferred GPT’s rendering here. The biggest difference appeared in poster accuracy. Nano Banana clearly won this one: the Taylor Swift poster correctly references the actual Lover-era artwork and branding, while GPT mixed The Eras Tour aesthetic with Lover into something that looks more hallucinated. The discrepancy is almost impossible to notice unless you’re a Taylor Swift fan, but it’s still a real difference in accuracy.

2 - Mirror selfie with an attached AI actor Both models failed to fully recreate the original environment. However, Nano Banana at least kept the room geometry realistic. In the GPT Image-2 example, the area to the left of the door looks structurally incorrect and noticeably artificial. Both models produced natural-looking skin tones. Nano Banana won on facial expression accuracy and pose consistency. GPT Image-2 also introduced visible artifacts around the jaw/chin area, which we noticed across multiple generations.

1 - Yoga studio mirror selfie (reference → Nano Banana 2 → GPT Image-2) Nano Banana 2 better captured the environment details: the Apple logo on the phone, yoga mat placement, time of day, and open curtains. GPT Image-2 won on the more natural subject pose and skin tones.
