Destiny has had around a million players a day since the update across all 3 platforms. Marathon has had a fraction of that at peak when it was free. Is it a bad game? No, I don’t think so. I don’t particularly care for it as I find the game loop kind of boring and lacking any real depth, it’s very one-note. But if that’s your thing there’s nothing wrong with it. But calling it anything other than financially an abject failure is just ignoring reality for the sake of personal coping. Sony has and is losing money on Marathon hand over fist, meanwhile D2 is printing money for free after a decade. It does make one wonder what Sony is actually thinking if they’re thinking at all.

I don't think I've seen a more delusional fan base than Marathon. People stopped playing because nobody in their right mind financially supports a game that's content is under supported and just not good. "Destiny's numbers will plummet" Bro your game never left the basement.

Destiny 2 at 140K+ players on a weekday while most people are at work, on an update that isn't even an expansion, pacing to double Marathon's all time peak. Sony failed with nearly every live service bet they have made. You had a winner the whole time. Wake up Sony.

Not that I expect huge numbers, but it is the middle of a work day on a Tuesday. I think the weekend will be a better representation of what to expect. That’s also just steam, Destiny has always had a larger console player base (80-90%) unlike Marathon which is mostly PC. total numbers:

As a long time D2 player, myself and most of the player base, fell off because frankly Bungie got lazy and greedy. The seasonal model slowly did in the game, making everything feel very repetitive and boring. Bring in Sony and shifting dev resources away and you end up with 6-10 month gaps with no content, then when content is released it’s either horribly milquetoast or just not… Destiny. Renegades was okay but that’s fan service for another franchise that a lot of D2 players (like me) didn’t even care about. This big content drop is bittersweet. It harkens back to the best of times in D2 (year 2) but it’s also the end. Players will comeback for it because it’s more like D2 at its peak and less like D2 at its worst, which is what we’ve had for the last 2-3 years. Call it whatever reductive name you want, but if you’re not invested in the franchise it’s meaningless to you anyway.

@ALegendaryDrops Also worth mentioning Subnautica 2 in EARLY ACCESS is dunking on Bungie right now in player count, which I find pretty funny all things considered.

@Fadaar85 @Gladd I think a new studio taking over the Destiny IP is probably the only way it would succeed. Bungie has proven they cannot be trusted without constant supervision (ie; Activision). They are basically toddlers.

Every time I think about how Bungie got where they are, I come back to this, and it all makes sense.
