I think they should introduce an additional requirement to POY called "positive units". Here's how it would work: Every time you enter an event, 1 unit is subtracted from your total. Every time you rebuy, again 1 unit is subtracted. Every time you cash, you are awarded units based upon their value compared to the buyin. So let's say you buy into a $1k event three times -- that's -3 units. Then let's say you cash $7,400 in the event. That's +7.4 units. So overall for that event, you are +4.4 units. Add all of this together at the end of the WSOP, and if you're at 0 units or negative, you can't be POY. If you are + units overall, then you are eligible, and the usual POY formula applies at that point. This solves both issues. It makes people ineligible whose losses were a result of high volume play and rebuys, while at the same time not disincentivizing playing a few nosebleed events.

What are we doing? Some of the guys that fire $1M (or $2M) trying to win @WSOP Player of the Year have gone public saying the system is fair Obs the system is NOT fair. If you lose money at WSOP, you should not win POY. It’s a simple fix… #POSITIVITY
