@AndrewGspeedrun I remember the DKC1 time. I remember trying to get it fixed, but I think TG was reticent to admit mistakes. It's counter-intuitive, but admitting mistakes and fixing them is a better trust model than pretending you're perfect and sweeping errors under the rug.

@sdkess It seemed as though certain things slipped by Robert... and when they did, Team Metroid would claim feats which were impossible. Notably I remember a dkc1 time, ridge racer times, and I think crazy taxi that simply werent possible with the rulesets they supposedly followed.

@AndrewGspeedrun Yes, I think Rodrigo took advantage of Robert. Unfortunately we're all fallible. I was skeptical of Metroid Team from pretty early on. Rodrigo claimed to beat NES Ninja Gaiden with no damage. I pressed him, and he didn't know anything about animation cancel mashing. Bogus claim.

@sdkess Yea im not sure what to think. I mean its was verified later on so I guess it could have been legit. TG's board at one point showed a submission date which matched with Rodrigo's claim about Carlos' time. But i think Rodrigo submitted to robert to cheat because he was overloaded.

@AndrewGspeedrun I've always wondered if Carlos' time was legit. Rodrigo, the mouthpiece of Brazil's "Metroid Team", created a topic at TG announcing a 5:09 NWR which pre-dated Trevor's 5:09. I also remember Rodrigo being frustrated at a later point because the record had not been verified yet.

It's possible that neither Trevor not I held the WR back then given the other player (Carlos Krueger of Team Metroid's) specific time is unknown. Unfortunate situation, but I think ironically the reason for this is because Rodrigo (another member of Team Metroid) was cheating.

@AndrewGspeedrun Right after the NES was released, one of my friends had to explain the difference to me. I had played Mario Bros on the Atari 2600, and he was like, you have no idea how much better this "Super" game is. Months later, I got to play SMB at a Radio Shack kiosk and was blown away.

Most people don't know there's a difference between Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros.

@Andrewgspeedrun @frezy_man I have most of my own videos that were on Vortiginous on YouTube, but I submitted quite a bit to TG without capturing the videos for public, especially high score stuff. I kept VHS copies/originals for a lot of that. I may go thru the VHS tapes one day and digitize some stuff.

@frezy_man @sdkess I'ver been thinking about the most prominent NES+SNES speedrunners and I realized that there just isn't a good compilaton of all the stuff you guys have done. For @sdkess I really wonder what remains from vortiginous whether from you or otherwise too.

It is SO funny to me that when I did this run I had the world record in Any%. This speedrun had 2 deaths and I submitted it to SDA and they accepted it. This was the world record in December, 2005! Things have certainly changed.

@Andrewgspeedrun @frezy_man Yes, I noticed a while back that some of my speed runs are not on SRC. I have never submitted a run there myself although I am glad that somebody did. My Dr. Chaos run is on there too although it's not attached to my sdkess user name.

@jay_the_wook Looks like fun, but it's too far away for me. I'm also very out of practice.

@Jabes_SSB @Kosmicd12 6 months later, I kill screened the Funspot machine at the tournament. Billy called Walter who handed his phone to me. We had a nice convo, but Billy made sure to mention that he had reached the KS on his first life. I'm not saying he didn't, but that was classic Billy.

@Jabes_SSB @Kosmicd12 Billy Mitchell story time. At about 9:30 in Kosmic's video, you can see my name listed as a kill screener. I actually reached the kill screen on my first life in that game. TG's head ref said it was a first that had never been achieved before.

After 44 Years, it's finally possible to get past the Kill Screen in Donkey Kong. Video in reply explains how! 🙂

@Kosmicd12 Sidebar: NES DK has some scoring glitches on the barrel board. I was able to get 2800 points by remaining stationary over a ladder and jumping a barrel as it went down the ladder. You also get 300 points (instead of 100) for jumping over a barrel moving in your direction.

@Kosmicd12 Yes, Tom Votava was the first person that I know of to reach the NES DK KS. I also remember Corey Chambers talking about it. TG has John Heins at the top of the leaderboard.

@sdkess @Andrewgspeedrun @creativeloafing Yes! That is it! I lived in Charlotte from 1986 to 2012! That makes so much sense! Like you filled a memory gap. I was definitely playing Game Cube in those days.

Still a little baffled by this, ad maybe it's lost media. There were some speedruns on TV which I think ultimately made me decide to finally record my video gaming. But I remember seeing specifically a SMB1 speedrun and I can't locate anything about it.

@Andrewgspeedrun I can't keep everything straight either, especially as I continue to age. I do hope some footage is found because I didn't have access to G4 back then and only heard from others about seeing something on TV.

@sdkess Awesome to see these! Thanks for sharing. I have often mixed up details when trying to remember the order of events from so long ago. Maybe I did see your 5:17 on G4TV, but yea you're right that it could have been a TAS. I'm hoping we find it in the archive for curiosity's sake.

@sdkess Very cool. Do you happen to know the date you dud your first Mario 1 speedrun and what the time was? 5:17 as for the first serious run maybe?

@Andrewgspeedrun It's possible that you saw a TAS for SMB1. Lots of videos were floating around in late 2003 and early 2004 that people didn't know were TAS. I had a slow 5:50-ish video up in December 2003. Someone told me that I "sucked" so it was then that I said, ok, WR or bust.

@sdkess It's possible it was yours in 2004 and I'm misremembering the other of events. It probably was considering I had no clue your run was featured! Some of my recollection is likely flawed. I saw the Mario 3 TAS I think prior and did runs before trying smb1

@Andrewgspeedrun @jay_the_wook @creativeloafing I should probably do a memory dump sometime of everything that I can recall about those early days. I actually did a speed run of Super Mario Bros back in 2002-ish, but I didn't record. I was competing in Super Monkey Ball, and a friend suggested beating the other SMB in under 6m

@sdkess @jay_the_wook @creativeloafing I'd be curious to hear how you got into speedrunning and specifically Super Mario Bros too. You basically had the first speedrun website also which was awesome. I dont know much about you or Tom Votava's history with gaming despite being among the pioneers of speedrunning.

@Andrewgspeedrun There was an article in a free weekly news paper called @creativeloafing in Charlotte, NC highlighting an engineer going after the SMB1 WR. Printed sometime between 2007 and 2012. This was my first introduction- I wish I could find the article…
