On July 30, 1942 the Navy Women's Reserve Act was signed into law, making room for WAVES - Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service - to support the efforts in WWII. WAVES were 86k enlisted and 8k officers strong by the end of recruitment in 1945.

Tuskegee Airmen also boldly confronted racial segregation within the Army. In 1945, 101 officers of the all-Black 477th Bombardment Group were arrested after refusing to sign a base regulation requiring segregated officers' clubs in what became known as the Freeman Field Mutiny.

Black Americans were made to serve in segregated military units until 1948. The 369th US Infantry, dubbed "The Harlem Hellfighters" for their tenacious service, were the first American troops to reach the Rhine and were cited more times than any other regiment in the US.

Once known as Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 was considered the end of the "war to end all wars" and was formally recognized by Congress in 1938 as the end of WWI. "Armistice" was amended to "Veterans" Day in 1954 by Congress to honor American veterans of all wars.

The Montford Point Marines were the first Black men to enlist after Roosevelt's EO 8802, ending racial discrimination but not segregation. Approx. 20k recruits were trained at Montford Point, willingly fighting to protect a nation that still did not offer them basic civil rights.

Meet Vernice "Flygirl" Armour, the first Black woman to become a naval aviator in the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps first female combat aviator. Since leaving the Marine Corps in 2007, Vernice has been a professional speaker and expert on creating breakthroughs in life.
