Writing this article on science communication in social media forced us to come up with arguments about why acousticians should use social media in the first place. I absolutely believe scientists should use social media, but I think we still need help figuring out how best to.

How can echolocating toothed whales make 500 clicks/second with air at 1000 m depth where air volume is compressed to <1%? With the same nasal sound source how do they produce powerful high frequency clicks for echolocation & softer, low frequency calls for communication?

REPOST from @rv_neil "You don't get to see this every day. Walking around and under a ship that weighs over 3 million pounds and is being held up by blocks gives you an appreciation for how big the ship really is." @whoi #whoi #oceanography #rvneilarmstrong

I think this is one of the coolest things to come out of NASA recently. We are putting trusses back under plane wings :)

We’re partnering with @Boeing to develop technologies for the next generation of single-aisle aircraft. We'll collaborate on a full-scale demonstrator by 2030 to help the U.S. achieve net-zero carbon emissions from aviation by 2050. Follow @NASAAero: go.nasa.gov/3QLmfJ6

@DanJonesOcean I am transitioning, and for me the blocker is C++. A useful skill I am sure but never could find a justification for using it.

**If** I were to ever transition to the private sector, I get the sense that I'd have to learn SQL in a hurry It shows up on *so many* job ads. But we basically never use it in my little corner of the research world...

@iamericmai I saw a poor fellow on a street corner trying to fix something on an e-bike so he could make it home. It looked no fun at all. I would certainly invest in a tool kit, and have a contingency plan.

@cutnoise Every road should have a continuous throughput of cars. The asphalt and space is wasted otherwise. Nothing worse than a cul-de-sac.

London Traffic Noise Map. What would you do? Focus on 'main' rds? Put in quiet rd surfaces, low speed limits, good sound insulation, promote quiet modes like walking, cycling Or cut traffic on the quieter side rds through low traffic neighbourhoods that move cars to 'main' rds?

The European Commission (@EU_ENV) has just released the first ever EU-wide ‘limits' for underwater noise. These threshold values contribute to governance on where and for how long marine habitats can be exposed to underwater noise. environment.ec.europa.eu/news/zero-poll…
