For this week's #TotalityTuesday, we're looking at the total solar eclipse of May 29, 1919; the eclipse that bent light and changed how we understand the universe. Sweeping across South America and Africa, it lasted 6 minutes and 50 seconds, but its true significance lays far beyond its duration. This was the moment Einstein's theory of general relativity was tested and proved. The idea was bold and simple. During totality, stars near the Sun become visible. If Einstein was right, their light would bend passing through the Sun's gravitational field, shifting their apparent positions. From England, Frank Watson Dyson coordinated two expeditions: Sir Arthur Eddington to Príncipe Island, and Andrew Crommelin to Sobral, Brazil. Both captured the eclipsed Sun on glass plates. When they compared star positions to nighttime sky maps, Einstein's prediction was confirmed: the Sun deflects starlight. 📷 Remarkably, one of the original Sobral plates still exists, digitized and restored, with the star shift still visible more than a century later. Swipe to see these historic photos.

“Iceland feels like a place that never stops forming itself. As a volcanologist, I spent my time trying to understand how planets form, fracture, and renew; and as a science journalist, I spend my days telling stories that reveal the explosive secrets of these worlds. At Iceland Eclipse, we get to witness both in one moment. I’m drawn to places where fire meets ice, and I’m looking forward to sharing this experience with people who care about nature, curiosity, and presence,” shares Dr. Robin George Andrews, @SquigglyVolcano . He’s a doctor of experimental volcanology, award-winning science journalist, photographer, and scientific consultant whose work explores how planets form and change.Robin is the author of <> and <>, with work featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, WIRED, and more. We’re excited to have him join our celestial gathering! If you feel drawn to moments like this, the path leads to #IcelandEclipse2026. Tickets available at icelandeclipse.com

It's our final #TotalityTuesday of the year! ✨ Today we’re recognizing the Wild West Eclipse of January 1, 1889. About the eclipse: • A rare total solar eclipse on New Year’s Day, the first in nearly 500 years and the last for another seven centuries • The Moon had passed perigee just one day earlier, appearing large enough to fully cover the Sun • Viewers reported that stars became visible, Venus shone brightly, and the solar corona was "luminous enough to read a watch by" Observers in Miles City, Montana wrote in The Daily Yellowstone Journal: “Words fail and comparisons are utterly inadequate to even faintly picture the supernal magnificence of this spectacle.” Another account added: “The ineffable glory of that scene cannot be described… its beauty and grandeur will always remain a climax.” The path of totality crossed the American frontier, including parts of California, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. In the second half of the 19th century, every total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. passed somewhere west of the Mississippi, making moments like this a rare encounter with the mechanics of the cosmos. Know an eclipse fact that deserves the spotlight? Drop it in the comments or send us a DM. With thanks to our friends at nationaleclipse.com for today’s #TotalityTuesday research.

This season carries a quiet magic, a threshold moment between anticipation and arrival. It's the same energy we feel in the minutes before totality, when the world holds its breath and the sky begins to shift. Merry Christmas from all of us at Iceland Eclipse. We cannot wait to gather with you next year. 📍 Hellissandur, Iceland 📷: @Karim_iliya

Across this pale blue dot, eclipse seekers from more than fifty countries are moving toward one moment, one island, one disappearing Sun. Today we pause to honor what brings us together. The pull toward totality. The courage to follow a shadow across oceans. The desire for experiences that make us feel awake and present. To our community, thank you for choosing wonder and for carrying this journey with us. You remind us that some moments are worth crossing the world to share. The cosmos keeps moving and we move with it. Our gratitude stays here for a while longer. Thank you and see you next year. #IcelandEclipse2026
