Napoleon, upon seeing an Englishman reading Milton, gave the following piece of advice: “Your British Homer lacks taste, harmony, warmth, and naturalness. Read again the Poet of Achilles. Devour Ossian. These are the poets who lift up the soul and give to man a colossal greatness”

"At the age of puberty, I became morose, somber; reading became for me a sort of passion pushed to the point of rage; I devoured all books." Napoleon

@renrubuk Napoleon knew rudimentary English & even wrote some later on St. Helena, but I think it is well known he read a French translation of Paradise Lost that was later regarded as terrible.

@novusolus As a humble Uzbek horse breeder, who am I to go against such a behemoth? In seriousness though, I do not understand the critique, and I am pretty sure the French translation Napoleon read was later regarded as awful.

His brother, Joseph, states that his trunk of books that he took on campaign with him was larger than his trunk of toiletries. When he was too busy to read for himself, he would have his librarian read to him or have them summarise works. One of them, Louis Ripault, he found to be too liberal and had replaced.

“For in so short a life, no human being is by nature so happy, neither in these matters nor in others, that it will not occur to him many times, and not just once, to wish to die rather than to live.” Artabanus
