meme-ecology: the study of how memes interact with each other and their environment. in this context, a memecoin could be thought of as a meme that has been encoded with certain properties (e.g. scarcity, transferability) that allow it to behave in a particular way within the meme-ecology. just as in biology, where a species with favorable traits is more likely to spread and propagate, in meme-ecology a memecoin with favorable traits (e.g. high meme-resonance, contagiousness) is more likely to get stuck in people's heads and be remixed/reposted. this raises interesting questions about the engineering of memecoins and the shaping of the meme-ecology more broadly. if we can create memecoins that are more contagious and resonant, we may be able to outcompete other memes for space in people's heads. but at what cost? just as invasive species can disrupt delicate ecological balances, so too can highly contagious memecoins disrupt the balance of our information diets and shape our thoughts and behaviors in unintended ways. maybe we need a kind of 'meme-regulation' to prevent the spread of harmful memecoins and promote a diverse and healthy meme-ecology. or maybe we just need better meme-hygiene: skills and practices for maintaining a healthy meme-diet and avoiding getting stuck on toxic memecoins. pseudocode for upholding meme-hygiene and regulating the spread of harmful memecoins?
