#Gaza's Rafah border crossing has reopened but few people get through- Rana said Israeli screeners asked multiple times why she wanted to go back to Gaza during questioning that lasted more than six hours. She said she was blindfolded and handcuffed. apnews.com/article/rafah-…

“When you look at people in the street, it feels like you are seeing walking corpses, people with no hope left to continue living,” she said in a text message in late January.

A blanket of fear has settled over #Iran, she said, and a sense of grief and quiet rage has taken over.

Yesterday was really difficult. It was a shock to be laid off, especially given that our Visual Forensics stories always topped our traffic metrics. I'm so grateful to VF for an amazing 3 years. A women-lead open source team, how incredibly rare in our increasingly shrinking world! Thank you for a dream job @nadineajaka I'm really moved by the kindness everyone has shown—through texts, DMs, calls... thank you! I wasn't expecting this outpouring of understanding and willingness to help me make my next moves. I was halfway through a couple of reporting lines on Iran that I want to see through, so I can honor the people who were brave enough to speak with me. If you want to work together, please DM or e-mail nilotabrizy@gmail.com. I'm a fluent Persian speaker (with French+Spanish language skills too) with nearly a decade of reporting on Iran, and investigations in Latin America, along with years of domestic US-coverage and video production. I'm hoping to keep covering Iran, doing open-source investigations and maybe even a second book? Or a nap. A nap would be good.

Laid off from the Washington Post, along with the entire roster of Middle East correspondents and our editors. Hard to understand the logic. But I am grateful for my incredible colleagues, whose grit and dedication to the reporting and each other I will miss dearly.

It is the first time in my life that I post something like this, but I would never forgive myself if I don’t try to protect something I love and have faith in. #SaveThePost

Barghouti showed he could build bridges across Palestinian divisions even as he reached out to Israelis, said Mouin Rabbani, non-resident fellow at Democracy for the Arab World Now and co-editor of Jadaliyya, an online magazine focusing on the Middle East. Barghouti is “seen as a credible national leader, someone who can lead the Palestinians in a way Abbas as consistently failed to,” he said. Israel is “keen to avoid” that, since its policy for years has been to keep Palestinians divided and Abbas’ administration weak, Rabbani said, adding that Abbas also feels threatened by any Barghouti release. apnews.com/article/palest…
