@selfdfens

We're a band. I'm just tweeting as Mr. Ditkovich until we've got a new record to promote.

It's old home week on twitter and people are debating veganism. I'll refrain from explaining how cheap it actually is, but I will point out that all the nutrition arguments are fake concern. If you care like that, pull up your friends for their mac & cheese diet.

@rowan_canyon I can't read that small. But if it's a defense of art, lit, that explores those ideas even in the graphic way Sotos' work does, this is 101 free-speech discourse. You can see it as an ugly, unnecessary thought-experiment, but it's not literal in the way you suggest.

@selfdfens Why would it be unreasonable for a person to believe that Albini genuinely liked the idea of broadening the boundaries of free speech to include CSAM? Where is the farce or irony in his writings on this topic

There's also this other thing that gets commented on but not explored very often: much of the Gen X arts sensibility was provocation towards fundamentalist thinking. So for 30-year-olds to be the ones offended in 2026 says something uncomfortable.
My Foot Hurts@footrecovering

@DonivanLattimer @selfdfens Yeah if you feel the need to include the word "cringy" to describe the work of a guy who tried to push the boundaries in a four-decade-old atmosphere completely foreign to modern sensibilities, maybe you're missing the point a little

@jamievampslayer You're obviously not wholly a product of your age, but do you notice that between your age and say 35 there's a cultural list towards literalism? Do you just assume that's 'correct' and shouldn't be examined?

Some truth here. But farce is just an example of being able to think hypothetically. Generational trends notwithstanding, it's an essential skill needed to understand lit, comedy, music, and other people broadly.
"Lou"ReedTyranny@nakedfoul

@selfdfens people who grew up on the internet, where they were exposed to whole communities of unreasonable people who believe and espouse the worst kind of shit and evil nonesense, do not understand farce.

@jamievampslayer I do not care about his records in a meaningful way. I would extend this same grace to Charli XCX, singer for Creed, or you. I'm asking this as a sincere question, not some type of gotcha: what's your age?

@selfdfens Why should a reasonable person be 100% sure that Albini isn’t a racist when he loved saying racial slurs and didn’t believe racism in America was a problem until 2016. Does making good rock records mean it’s impossible to believe he was a shitty person?

Until I found myself on the wrong side of aspiring-Pitchfork-writer Twitter, I had no idea words like 'poptimist' and 'rockist' existed. These are not things musicians talk about. It feels weird to give years of your life to something that observers fundamentally mischaracterize.
Jacobin@jacobin

Rock, according to its critics, had already been buried. And yet thanks to today’s youth, it’s roared back to life: jacobin.com/2026/05/poptim…

Not to kick up some shit, but I'm noticing there's a specific variety of non-musician involved in the music industry advocating hard for comfortable travel. This is because that person is on a rate or salary divorced from profits. They get paid regardless.

Sorry for whatever contribution I made to the tour money discourse. I now see the least-informed people in the universe weighing in, making for a painful feed. And this is coming from a guy who didn't know there was an article until two-hours into the conversation.

@unpumpthevolume @DrGorillaFarts I don't propose that. I had only seen the slides, so I did not know they had as many people with them as they did. You cannot tour with that many people in a cost effective way in those size venues. Reading the article, it's clear they want to make it fun. Which is cool.

@selfdfens @DrGorillaFarts How do you propose they fit 12 adults, two children and a driver in a sprinter? Hotel rooms for that many people would add at least a grand a day, more in bigger cities. Hotels have gotten incredibly expensive in the last few years.

A band posted their expenses for a US tour. I didn't wanna quote tweet them as it feels aggressive, but at a glance I see over $60k in waste. Up to them how they spend their money, but that's a lotta burnt cash for a band that plays rooms I'm very familiar with.

@taylorxyoung Yeah, I was approaching it based on the slides and assuming it was another "the real costs of touring" sorta thing. And couldn't make sense of it. But as far as information for their fans, it's cool.

@selfdfens Just went and read the article. It’s clear that they don’t intend to feed their families with the band, just make it a fun hobby, but IMO that makes the article is a little pointless as an informational read because they’re showing the costs for a band that tours small arenas.

Quote-tweeting for other people's readability. Did not see an article. Only the infograph format. And the final slide of that gave me the impression you were not happy with the returns (reference to rich kids and corporate rock).

@selfdfens this landed on our "for you" page, wow the algorithm is smart. Unsure if you read the piece (don't think you did) but at the start I make clear that it's intended for our fans as an explanation of our specific circumstances, and provide context as I knew it would go out of bubble

@LosCampesinos I wouldn't begrudge you if you wanted to tour in steam-powered mech. I also think it's nice to bring kids around the world. Even if they primarily see Arby's and Target in the US.

@selfdfens Hoping you feel differently now than you did when you first posted. We're not mugs, and we're not wasteful, the write-up was only meant to reflect our reality for the benefit of our audience. Have since realised this account is SDF, great band, bumping the SIF single now.

This is not for me to judge. If they wanna bring family, I love the vibe. But there is no practical reason to have more than two crew members when playing rooms this size.

@selfdfens @DrGorillaFarts their touring party includes 14 people tho

@LosCampesinos Yeah, 5. Seeing the US is cool for the kids. Financially 'impossible.' I recognize this is academic, because you are touring how you want. I rely on touring for 2/3 of my income, so it's a different game. I'd slice crew for savings on staff and accommodations.

@selfdfens It's a minimum of 5, isn't it? 2 parents with the kids, leaves 10 across 4 rooms. Also...if we're staying in hotels it's gotta be out of town, right? So where are the kids while the show's on? I promise I have the logistics and the costings right on this!
