A Durban court has sentenced 47-year-old unpatriotic Judith Salome Zuma, a former Home Affairs employee, to an effective 12-year prison term for her role in a large-scale passport fraud syndicate. Zuma pleaded guilty to charges including corruption, fraud, and violations of immigration and identification laws. Between 28 May and 12 June 2021, she processed 192 fraudulent South African passports for foreign nationals who were not eligible to hold them. These individuals were from countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the DRC. Court details revealed that she made between R760,000 and R768,000 from the scheme, charging around R4,000 per passport. Her arrest came after a sting operation, where she allegedly attempted to bribe a counter-corruption official with R10,000. The case was investigated by the Hawks. This sentencing highlights ongoing concerns around corruption and fraud within South Africa’s immigration system, with the full impact of the fraudulent documents still unclear.
