Today is K9 Veterans Day, and we’re celebrating the incredible four-legged operators who redefine bravery every single day. Retired Master Sergeant Ryan Baker knows better than anyone that these dogs aren't just assets, they're lifesavers. “Working as a Special Operations Forces Multipurpose Canine Handler and Trainer was the most rewarding experience of my career. From finding IEDs, caches of weapons/munitions, to tracking fighters on foot my dogs could do it all. On March 8, 2012, just 18 days into his first deployment, Specialist Andrew Smith stepped on an IED while on patrol with the 82nd Airborne near Kandahar, Afghanistan. He lost both legs, one above the knee and the other below, and suffered extensive damage to multiple internal organs. He was medevaced to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he spent several weeks in the ICU. Andrew’s arrival at Walter Reed marked a big milestone in The Fund's history. The Fund was founded in 2004 and originally assisted Marines and Sailors through Semper Fi Fund. In 2012, our assistance was extended to soldiers and airmen through America’s Fund. Andrew became the very first soldier assisted under Semper Fi & America’s Fund. Andrew and his wife Tori were married for less than three months when he was injured. Tori left law school in the middle of the semester and remained bedside with him for nearly two years. The Fund was there with the entire family in the ICU room, throughout his recovery, and today, as Andrew and Tori raise three children. Today we celebrate Andrew’s 14th Alive Day, and 14 years of The Fund helping service members and veterans from all branches of the military. #AliveDay #SemperFiAndAmericasFund

Because of @HomeDepotFound, USMC veteran Chad Brumpton now has safer mobility inside his home. After surviving an IED attack in Iraq, daily wheelchair navigation became a challenge. In 2004, Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Joe “Doc” Worley deployed to Fallujah as an infantry platoon medic. When an IED struck Marines in his unit, he ran toward the blast to reach them. A second explosion tore through the area, claiming his left leg and severely injuring his right. Gravely wounded and fighting for his own life, Doc stayed conscious long enough to call out life-saving instructions for other injured Marines. For his valor under fire, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. When he returned to the U.S., Doc realized that the battle was far from over. He had 20 months of grueling rehabilitation, constant pain, and the fear of an uncertain future. The Fund moved quickly to lift as many burdens as possible, helping with financial gaps, travel and lodging, and the practical details that allowed Doc’s young family to remain together and focus on healing. Over the next 20 years, Doc continued to face new challenges at home and The Fund has supported Doc in every part of that journey.
