Forty years ago today my grandfather Todd Andrews passed away aged 84. He had fought in the war of independence and the civil war, was a founding member of Fianna Fáil in 1926 and played a prominent role in the industrialisation of Ireland in the years that followed. The first picture shows him aged 20 (far left) with Ernie O’Malley (white cap), Sean McBride (trench coat) and Andy Cooney during the occupation of the Four Courts in May 1922. I was young when he died but his remarkable record of public service certainly influenced my own career path.
