A young woman broke down in tears after allegedly being defrauded of about GHS 8,000 by mobile money scammers who posed as officials from MTN. According to the victim, she received a phone call from individuals claiming to be from the telecom company, who threatened to block her mobile money account. Fearing the consequences, she said she was instructed to visit multiple mobile money agents to transfer funds in order to “secure” her account. In a state of panic, the woman complied and sent the money in several transactions before later realising she had been deceived.

A woman named Abida Akila Abubakar has been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly being involved in Mobile Money fraud targeting MoMo merchants at over 10 shops in Accra. Her arrest came after multiple agents reported similar claims of being swindled. This follows an earlier incident in June 2025, where she was accused of attempting to defraud an agent in Batsoona.
