🚨 THE FULL GERARD MARTÍN STORY:
Hansi Flick arrived at FC Barcelona in 2024 already prepared. He had asked for reports on many academy players before meeting them. One of them was Gerard Martín.
Martín was 22 at the time. He had experience in the lower divisions and had been important for Barça Atlètic. Flick was not fully convinced at first, but he decided to keep him with the first team. Martín gradually adapted to the level and became a useful rotation player.
In his first season, he mostly played as a left-back. That changed after Iñigo Martínez left the club. Barça needed a natural left-sided center-back. Flick began testing Martín in that role during preseason and the Asia tour.
From that moment, his role changed completely. Martín settled as a center-back and his performances improved quickly. He had already played in that position earlier in his career, so the adaptation was natural.
His results have been strong. He has started 19 matches as a center-back, with 18 wins and 1 draw. Barça have won 95% of those games. He also leads in aerial duels with 71% and has a 96% pass accuracy.
Martín has also improved on the ball. He now carries the ball forward more and plays vertical passes that break lines. One of his passes led to a goal against Newcastle.
Flick has praised his mentality, effort, and attitude. Martín has not followed a special individual plan. His improvement has come through regular training and understanding the system.
He has gone from a backup left-back to an important center-back option for Barça.
