one of the many reasons why i adore this man is the way he communicates. he doesn’t hide behind generic PR answers or vague excuses. he takes the time to explain what’s happening, admits when things aren’t working, and speaks with honesty even when the truth isn’t easy to hear

🇬🇧 Carlos for DAZN after Qualifying: Q: "We’ve heard on the radio that it was a dreadful lap. That could well be the headline in the standings." C: "Well, a dreadful lap… We managed to beat them, get into Q2 and, well, yes, perhaps with a perfect lap we could have beaten the Haas that beat us, but the car was so tricky to drive throughout the whole session that it was very difficult to put in a perfect lap. But you saw it with Alex as well – he was a bit behind and nothing came of it. We’re trying things out; we’re trying to get this front wing to work, but it’s clear that something isn’t working within the team, in the wind tunnel. We’re not finding improvements that bring us closer to that VCarb, which is 7 or 8 tenths ahead, but it’s a point: last year we were 6 tenths behind McLaren, when McLaren were winning races and we were managing the odd podium and top-five finish. This year the VCarb is 8 tenths ahead, and then Ferrari and Mercedes are almost two seconds behind. So, we’re very, very far off, and we need to see how we can improve." Q: "Has anything changed in the way we work within the team…?" C: "No. The regulations have changed, and the way we identify aerodynamic set-up points is different from last year; it’s clear that we don’t fully understand these aerodynamic regulations. Because it’s clear that we’re not managing to improve at the same pace as the others, and we’re also starting from a worse baseline, just as we were at the start of the season. So, we need to sit down and think, go back to the design office and work out what we’re doing that’s preventing the situation from improving." #BritishGP | #CarlosSainz
