@carlatcole @sfchronicle Can't. They are protected in the Charter, as a result of a 2-1 vote in their favor in 1948, when the City tried to scrap them. Turned out locals like the history of their City and didn't want it messed with.

@EricaJSandberg @sfchronicle And the 'costs' were a reason given to scrap them back in 1947. Turned out some of the claims were specious, and Mrs. Klussman demonstrated that they were worth their weight in gold many time over, as an uproar over their being scrapped went world wide in 1948!!

@sfchronicle a detail you forgot: the historic cable cars are a draw for the city. they're synonymous with San Francisco. its cost is more than warranted.

@credealjunkie There have been a plethora of "real estate" names (sic) assigned to neighborhoods in the last 30 years of so. Cayuga was (and sometimes still is!) a creek. Old timers had their own names for many places(some weren't even extant!).

@atllam @credealjunkie But those are all "new" monikers--used to be "south of the slot" from the cable car slots on Market Street. And they had a distinct accent as well!

@littlebrotha123 @KenjiCapital @credealjunkie When it was developed in the 1920s the style of the houses resembled those sort of "storybook" or bungalow houses popular in southern California real estate at the time. A pal grew up on Tocoloma and his dad had the local bar on the corner.

@EricaJSandberg Dad was a member, so my brothers and I all had a card. Loved the bar high up in the building and the piano player at sunset. Always a stop even if we were dining somewhere else in the vicinity. Beautiful building.
