@Eric_Erins Too bad that the old Mt Auburn Cable Rwy. powerhouse couldn’t be saved; so few have been. Difficult to “repurpose”. But glad that the Walnut Hills Rwy. one was saved though!

Cincinnati is a good city because you can buy a total shell of a building that, built in an urban form that we just don't build anymore, in a run down neighborhood neighborhood for just under $250K. The dream of 1970's Greenwich village lives on in the Midwest

The line wraps around Mitchell's Ice Cream in every kind of weather, and everyone in it is clutching a little paper number like they're waiting at the deli. That's Mitchell's, and it's been a San Francisco ritual for more than 70 years. The Mitchell family came west in 1865 to run a dairy farm in what was then rural Noe Valley. When the city moved to demolish the family's building in 1947 to widen San Jose Avenue, they fought back, and the city ended up lifting the whole building and turning it 90 degrees to save it. ⠀ The ground-floor storefront sat empty until 1952, when Margaret Mitchell's grandsons decided to do something with it. Larry, 24, who spent three decades as a city firefighter, and his older brother Jack opened Mitchell's Ice Cream on June 6, 1953, with 19 flavors of all-American ice cream, each made with a rich 16% butterfat base. ⠀ Then came the twist that made them famous. In the early 1960s, a friend introduced Larry to Filipino mango. He began importing the fruit from the Philippines, and mango shot to the top of the menu, where it has stayed ever since. As the neighborhood grew more diverse, so did the freezer: ube, macapuno, buko, langka, avocado, halo-halo, flavors that made new arrivals from the Philippines feel instantly at home. ⠀ Jack retired in 1982, but the family never let go. Brian and Linda Mitchell run the shop today, still churning all 40 daily flavors in the back room on the same recipe, still one store on the corner of 29th and San Jose. In 2023, the city named Mitchell's an official Legacy Business, and a mural went up on the outside wall for its 70th birthday. ⠀ So take a number and don't overthink it. Some things in this city are worth the wait. When we posted our list of ice cream in San Francisco, Mitchell's was the most commented as the one to visit.

@pitsenberger It was! The "Cliff Line" ran from 1886-1905! Fairly contemporaneous with the Park & Ocean RR, which ran on "H" St. (now Lincoln Way) on the other side of Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach. (This photo taken where Kezar stadium is now). The Halcyon Days!

Great shot of old California Cable Co. line, taken just after Muni assumed ownership (1951). In 1954, the Cal line was cut back to Van Ness Avenue from Presidio Ave. In 1957 this line stopped operating while Muni consolidated the Cal system into the Washington-Mason powerhouse.

The bar, which was established over a century ago would often host thirsty baseball fans who attended San Francisco Giants games at Seals Stadium, where the team made its home in 1958 and 1959.

@RetroBayArea When I had a car, we did it all the time. Wash, wax, "simonize"! I noticed that with the water shortages & drought pricing some years, people started to use the public car washes. When I was a kid though, those were far & few "amusement park" rides!!

Have you ever seen someone washing a car in San Francisco? Me neither. It’s been over three months since I posted this… and I still haven’t seen it happen. Not once. When was the last time anyone actually washed their own car here? I can’t remember ever seeing it. 📸: Intersection of Lombard and Jones, San Francisco in the 1970s. Proof that we used to.

@pitsenberger That was the 19th C western terminal, so San Franciscans could connect with the steam train to the Beach! The cemeteries were all in the area too, as it was not developed at the time.

@VladSF As a kid, my dad went to Seals games across the street with his Dad. Grandpa was fond of an "ice cube" as they used to say, so he would tell Dad that he was going to the restroom and nip over to the Double play. Dad could see him from the stands.

@VladSF Miss the old Acorn Used books store on Polk--they had everything, including a large "San Francisco/California" section.

As an avid used bookstore supporter I think there isn't as much of an overlap as one would think. If you want to go to Barnes & Noble to get a new book or magazine you do that, if you want a vintage, out of print title you go hunting at a used bookstore. sfstandard.com/2026/07/21/bar…
