It's Health Information Professionals Week, and we are proud to highlight 2021 State Fair Community College graduate Camryn Propst, CCA, of Stover. Camryn works as a Medical Coder for Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, a valued partner of SFCC. She plays an essential role in patient care by ensuring that medical data is managed with the highest level of integrity and security.
Serving a rural healthcare system primarily from her home office, Camryn views her work as a deeply personal responsibility. "When you review a medical record, you realize it’s not just a random account number," Camryn shares. "That information belongs to a human being with a real name and story behind it."
The Health Information Technology (HIT) program at SFCC provided Camryn the "technical and practical" foundation needed to navigate the ever-changing landscape of medical codes and record systems. One of the most vital lessons her instructors emphasized was the ability to think critically.
"Medical coding isn’t always black and white. There is often a gray area that requires looking beyond the surface and using all the data in a health record to ensure accuracy," she explains. "That level of detail is essential for the next step of the revenue cycle."
For Camryn, SFCC was a "perfect fit" that allowed her to utilize the A+ program scholarship, graduate debt-free and launch a successful career. She encourages current and future students to stay curious and flexible. Her best advice? Never think you’re done learning. "Coding is a constantly changing field," Camryn says. "You are never going to quit learning, so always be willing to add another skill to your toolbox."
Health information professionals serve a crucial role in modern medicine. While their work occurs largely behind the scenes, these professionals protect and manage the data that makes quality patient care possible.
