Here are some recent-ish books I’m reading or have read & enjoyed: Piranesi, Possession, The Whalebone Theatre, The Raven Scholar, various Sharon Penman books, The Essex Serpent (& Enlightenment), Babel, The Ministry of Time, Starling House, The Secrets of Hartwood Hall.

I’m looking for a good contemporary novel. I’ve been reading a lot of medieval poems & sagas and realized I’d read hardly any recent fiction this year. I love a book that’s a bit cerebral, a bit strange, and tells a solidly plotted story with a minimum of fuss.

Surprisingly few, maybe.
Instead, I write stories that ask the reader to figure out what’s going on within their own bounds.
It’s more satisfying as a reader to click those pieces together and have the moment of catharsis than it is to do the Leo pointing meme

@dcafwriting more of a social media thing than in literature, but I’ve seen so many “should of” or “could of” instead of “should’ve” or “could’ve”

The number of people who write “weary” when they mean “wary” has increased precipitously in the last few years and it drives me crazy. “Weary” means tired, not alert!

I'm seeing a GROWING number of my grammar and spelling pet peeves used every day. PSA: It’s “paid,” not “payed,” “medieval,” not “mid-evil.” You don’t LOOSE a game, you LOSE it. Stop saying “unalived” when you mean “died.” “Costed” is not a word!

@BrentWeeks I think its part of the slow immersion into the world for his readers. going from the shire to the old forest (representing the journey into fairy) is a strange new thing for most people and while bombadil himself is strange, his house is a familiar setting

Honest question for Tolkien lovers, novelists, and editors: Aside from world building, (which I think could be done in better ways), what does the Tom Bombadil section of LoTR accomplish that makes it necessary?
