A whale and three fish sitting down to a formal dinner of Russian sailors, in a propaganda cartoon created by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915), during the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5). View more from this superb series of prints here: buff.ly/2w0DK1S

I am in Japan, and set the time zone on my automatic time correction watch to New York, so I watched the moment it switched to winter time. If someone has a traffic accident at 1:30, will the police report say it was "first 1:30" or "second 1:30"?

@tinyantennas did not know 柳葉魚 — very cool! how about 秋刀魚 (sanma)? three-kanji names are a bit more memorable than the single kanji with fish radical

@BradshawLSWR I knew it as a hospital, but not that it had been the Workhouse--fascinating! I used to catch the bus to Beaminster for school from there; would leave my bike chained to that very lamp post (or its forebear?) That was when Barrack St. was still open, no Sea Road extension yet.

Built in 1836 this was the Bridport Workhouse. It later became a Geriatric hospital but was converted into flats in 2000

@halfmanhalfb00k @ElandPublishing This is a great book! Perfect companion to reading Bashō, but also an inspiring travel book of its own -- looking forward to your review (and feeling old bc I bought my copy more than 30 years ago...)
