The #SGR remains a strategic pillar in driving Kenya’s #agricultural productivity and overall economic growth.

Today, Kenya Railways transported subsidized fertilizer consignments destined for National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots in Eldoret, Moi’s Bridge and Kitale, as part of the Government’s ongoing food security programme ahead of the 2026 long-rains planting season. The fertilizer, including the maiden Mavuno-branded consignment by Maisha Minerals and Fertilizer Ltd., a subsidiary of Devki Steel Mills Ltd., was loaded at the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) Athi River Station and flagged off by the Principal Secretary for Agriculture, Dr. Paul Kipronoh Ronoh. The event was hosted by Kenya Railways Managing Director, Mr. Philip J. Mainga, EBS, alongside NCPB Managing Director, CPA Samuel Karogo Ndung’u, and Maisha Minerals and Fertilizers Limited Director, Mr. Bhargav Pandit , highlighting the strong collaboration between Government and the private sector in strengthening agricultural supply chains. Since 2023, Kenya Railways has played a strategic role in railing Government-subsidized fertilizer to rail-served NCPB depots across the country, ensuring timely delivery to farmers while enhancing agricultural productivity. Efficient rail freight continues to support food security, stabilize commodity prices, reduce logistics costs and sustain employment across the agricultural value chain. In preparation for the upcoming planting season, the Corporation is transporting fertilizer through the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR), Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), and intermodal SGR/MGR solutions available at key facilities including Mai Mahiu Station and the Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD). Mai Mahiu Station further strengthens this capacity with a 4,000-ton storage warehouse, offering integrated rail and warehousing solutions to customers. Additional depots targeted for fertilizer distribution during both the long and short rains seasons include Thika, Sagana, Karatina, Kiganjo, Nanyuki, Naivasha, Nakuru, Elburgon, Kipkelion, Butere, Kipkarren River, Yala, Turbo, Webuye, Bungoma and Malaba, among others equipped with rail sidings. As Kenya prepares for the long-rains season, rail logistics remain a critical enabler of agricultural transformation and national development. Kenya Railways continues to provide reliable, cost-effective and sustainable freight solutions that connect producers to markets and power the country’s growth.
