The Sri Lanka lesson India must not repeat — and cannot afford to ignore. A fertiliser shortage is coming. The question is whether India announces a transition or stumbles into one. The difference is everything shorturl.at/qrT80

It’s snowing in Ladakh in March, a season that should be transitioning to spring. The winter snowfall that once recharged our groundwater and fed our springs is arriving late and disappearing fast. The shift is not subtle. Climate change is rewriting the hydrology of the Himalayas, and mountain communities are living it every day. #snowfall

On March 6, Israeli forces struck three sets of oil depots ringing Tehran simultaneously. The explosions were massive. Nearby residential areas were destroyed. Millions of liters of gasoline, diesel, and petroleum derivatives ignited, sending columns of black smoke thousands of feet into the air. Then rain passed through those dark clouds on its way down, absorbing what was suspended there and landing as something that was no longer quite rain, leaving a foul layer on everything it touched. The particles released by this kind of petrochemical fire travel deep into the lungs, into the small airways and the alveoli and lodge there. The acute effects are respiratory distress, chemical bronchitis, and exacerbated asthma. For children, the elderly, anyone with an underlying lung condition, like the tens of thousands of chemical-weapons survivors from the wars of yesteryear who are still alive, the exposure is not an inconvenience. The long-term effects include lasting pulmonary damage. Several of the compounds released by burning petroleum derivatives are also established carcinogens. “What we witnessed on Saturday in Tehran may be the largest release of petrochemical toxins over a civilian population since the Iran-Iraq War,” Narges Bajoghli writes. “To see this as collateral damage, or an unfortunate byproduct of legitimate military operations, requires accepting that 9 million people’s lungs are an acceptable externality of war.” Bajoghli reports on how chemical warfare impacts not just military campaigns, but results in the slow accumulation of harm in bodies and landscapes: nymag.visitlink.me/y2FzMZ
