After a CCTV video from Moradabad showed a group of schoolgirls putting a burqa on their Hindu friend, an FIR was filed under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act against five Muslim girls. The case has since disrupted the lives of the teenagers, with one sent out of town, another stopping tuitions, and the Hindu girl also withdrawing from coaching classes.
Police say the matter is under investigation, with no arrests made so far. While the Hindu girl has alleged pressure and other conduct, the families of the accused have described the incident as a misunderstanding, saying the girls were close friends. The case has triggered a wider debate on intent, law and the impact of criminal proceedings on minors.
