Lois Gunden risked her life to save Jewish children during the Holocaust. In France, she opened a home to protect children who had lost everything, even telling the Nazis they were war orphans. By moving beyond headlines and into nuanced dialogue, we saw students actively deconstructing old assumptions. Twenty Two participants. Six Middle Eastern countries. One shared mission. Yesterday marked Day 1 of our journey. We began in Kazimierz, retracing the history of a community in Krakow that was nearly extinguished. Visiting the Alte, Remu, and Tempel Synagogues and the Miodowa cemetery, we tried to imagine the vibrance of Jewish life before the Holocaust. The focus of our first day was simple but heavy. We spoke about the importance of not only remembering history but acknowledging its impact on our world today.
