It's Daffodil Day! 💛🌼💙A day to raise awareness and improve cancer care for all!
For people with intellectual and physical disabilities, as well as older adults, accessing cancer care isn’t just about getting an appointment—it’s about being heard, supported, and receiving the right care at the right time. Yet, too many face barriers at every stage. Findings from the EUCAN project highlight critical challenges, from difficulties in symptom reporting and screening access to systemic workforce pressures and a lack of tailored support. Without change, delays in diagnosis and treatment will continue—but we can fix this.
Findings from the EUCAN project highlight critical challenges:
🔸 Delays in diagnosis due to difficulties verbalizing symptoms
🔸 Barriers to screening & navigating healthcare systems
🔸 Lack of tailored support, leaving many without the care they need
We can change this! Solutions include:
✅ Inclusive communication – easy-read materials & visual aids
✅ Personal advocacy – empowering carers & families to ensure timely care
✅ System-wide improvements – better training, more resources, and proactive, person-centred care
Cancer care must be accessible to all—no one should be left behind. This #DaffodilDay, let's push for equity in cancer care. 💛

The Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability (TCAID) was delighted to be well represented at the recent @TCD_SNM, @tcddublin Research Showcase Event.
Our team presented a wide variety of impactful research, including studies on bone health, cancer care, dementia support, oral health, circles of support, economic analysis of services, and family caregiving. We also had a dedicated stand to showcase what TCAID is all about 💡.
A huge congratulations to Dr. Fidelma Flannery for her brilliant lightning talk ⚡ on the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on the mental health of older adults with intellectual disabilities.
A special thank you to Prof. @EilishBurke15, Director of Research, for her incredible work in organising this event 🙌. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring together research and innovation across the lifespan.

If we truly value #mentalhealth in this country we need to eliminate the financial barriers for psychologists to be trained
Get paid as a HSE AP then have to decide which higher training route to choose to qualify:
1⃣ get paid for your work
2⃣ work for free for 3 years

There are so many aspiring psychologists who change career after doing undergraduate and msc/ma degrees due to the many barriers that they will face whilst attempting get onto a doctoral program. These barriers lead to lack of diversity in the field, which is unfair to many of us
Richard Boyd Barrett@RBoydBarrett
Instead of making it easier for students to become psychologists, we are charging up to 15k per year for them to study. As a result, waiting lists for mental health are enormous and people from working-class communities are priced out. The government must do better!

The PSI and @TheUSI are calling on the Government to address the disparity in funding for psychology trainees in Ireland, and ensure the country has the psychological workforce it needs. See bit.ly/3dycrjB to read the statement in full. #MyPSI
