@cturnbow @linakhanFTC @nytimes But #WSJ digital subscription cancellation still requires a phone call. (Subscribing was a couple clicks.) Come on, people.
@FTC - go get em!
English

@cturnbow @linakhanFTC @nytimes It appears that digital-only no longer requires a conversation. See the “update” at the end of this. niemanlab.org/2021/11/the-en…
But print doesn’t require talking to subscribe, just to cancel. Probably not kosher any longer.

1. Given complaints about unauthorized charges & impossible-to-cancel billing, FTC has issued a policy statement making clear that firms that trick customers into signing up for subscriptions or trap them when they try to cancel are breaking the law. ftc.gov/news-events/pr…

@linakhanFTC The @nytimes cancellation process (requires a phone call) is now illegal. Let the crack-down begin.

@getfiscal @ggreenwald Teacher offered a compromise of using the pronouns the student requested and adding a note to his syllabus that he uses students' requested pronouns not willingly, but at the direction of the university. The school rejected that compromise. They insisted on complete acquiesce.
English

@ggreenwald Couldn’t there be some sort of compromise, like the teachers say the pronouns but use air quotes? I don’t get why the lawyers always have to get involved.

I read this ACLU brief. This is the first time, at least to my knowledge, that ACLU is explicitly arguing in court that the First Amendment's free speech clause has been interpreted *too broadly* by courts, and are advocating *a more restrictive view* of what free speech means.

BREAKING: Three teachers in Loudoun county are going to court simply because they don't want to use trans & nonbinary students' pronouns. 👀 We and partners filed an amicus brief to tell the court: Refusing to use a student's pronouns because of who they are is discrimination.

@chadbarbe My first thought is that this is a fringe thing— there will always be a few crazies. But 1 in 10 voters! What the heck, America?!
English

@a_centrism “I don’t see color” = cringe; “I endeavor to treat people equally regardless of race” = statement of principles (not “micro aggression”, IMO)

@thomaschattwill Also Hanlon's razor. It applies in so many situations.
English

@MrWidmaier I think my confusion is over terminology more than anything. I see what you’re saying about Wegs decisions having disproportionate negative impact on non-whites and agree that is a bad thing. I wouldn’t characterize it as white supremacy unless that impact was the *intent*.
English

@MrWidmaier The location of the store you ref is called “Country Club Plaza”— so that probably influenced the name. (That was “my” Wegs a few years ago.)
I try to use Hanlon’s Razor before judging others. Maybe try that?
English

@MrWidmaier Are you saying that Wegmans closed city locations not for legitimate business reasons, but because of white supremacy? Is there any evidence for that?
English

Wow, there are so many people attending the #BidenInauguration — way more than attended Trump’s. Probably like 500 times as many. Also, did you notice how it was shady until @JoeBiden took oath and then the sun came out?! That was amazing. #MockTrumpLies

@BretWeinstein It's worse now.
People saying Trump "isn't MY President" in '16/'17 were making a statement that they don't believe he is a decent reflection of their values.
People saying Biden "isn't THE President-elect" now are denying reality. And some of them trying to subvert democracy.

“I would be willing to....” But he doesn’t. He can’t piss of such a large chunk of his base.

Chris Wallace asking Trump to condemn white supremacists was phenomenal.

@JLD7078 Pretty cool. The last scene though-- The helicopters look like they're about to crash. What is the explosion in the background?... the dumpster fire that is America in 2020?
