I strongly urge the Israeli government to reconsider its decision to take over Gaza City. Such an operation — together with the continued illegal expansion of settlements in the West Bank, the massive destruction in Gaza, the blockade of humanitarian aid, and the spread of famine — not only violates the agreement with the EU announced by the High Representative on July 19 but also undermines fundamental principles of international law and universal values. Such a decision must have consequences for EU-Israel relations, to be assessed by the Council.
Since the barbaric terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, the EU has maintained a consistent position: condemning the attack, demanding the unconditional release of all hostages, recognizing Israel’s right to legitimate self-defense in accordance with international and humanitarian law, and reaffirming the two-state solution as the only political path for stability in the region, while supporting the Palestinian Authority in assuming effective control of the territory.
The situation in Gaza remains dramatic, and the decision by the Israeli government will only further worsen it. The two-state solution remains the only sustainable, long-term solution for peace and security in Israel and the region.
