‘It is a paradoxical moment, in which documentary evidence is still able to land a few punches, even as new technologies threaten its credibility like never before.’ nytimes.com/2026/02/15/us/…

If you're thinking about teaching something but you're hesitant, keep this in mind: Most people don't want to learn from experts, they want to learn from their future-self. A lot of folks I talk to hesitate to teach a course, record a youtube video, or even post on social media because they don't consider themselves an expert in their field. Aspiring to be the expert instructor is daunting. You feel like you need to be on the frontier of your industry which can take years, if not decades. But when I talk to students, analyze course reviews and feedback, I notice the same thing over and over. Students love learning from someone who's just a few steps ahead of them. The student sees the instructor as their future-self. New grads love learning from someone who's been in the role for 5 years. Folks with 10 years of experience, love learning from someone who just achieved a Director or VP title. Students want to see themselves in the shoes of the instructor. They aspire to be there and it's a lot more attainable when the instructor is a couple years ahead instead of a couple decades. So when you're thinking about teaching someone online, consider teaching your past-self, 3-5 years ago. What would you have wanted to learn? Congratulations, you just identified your target audience.

My challenge with digital marketing is that we work tirelessly to meet expectations of near-sighted algorithms that even their creators don't fully grasp. Extrapolate forward with ubiquitous AI and it's not the machines I'm scared of, it's our deference to them.

Watched Tetris and Air over the weekend, catching up on my favourite cinematic genre. What are some other good business dramas?

@jonahwolfraim Similar to ikea. Light labours of love. Small financial investments, larger investment of time and resulting emotional connection

General Mills doesn't sell cake mix, they sell ownership. Customers feel ownership when they contribute to the cake in a meaningful way. Students feel ownership when they reach an understanding or realization fuelled by their own insight.

Teaching something? Consider Betty Crocker cake mix. To sell more cake, General Mills gave customers the ingredients and the final few steps to make their cakes. Buy mix + add egg/oil/water + bake = enjoy. Do the same for your students. Don't just give them the cake.

Sadly I’m not buying the idea the pandemic is forcing people to rethink their consumption. Think it may actually be driving more materialism— shifting $$ previously allocated for shared experiences (e.g. restaurants, travel) towards buying more “things”.
