Isioma Nkemdilim Nkiruka Daniel, a 21-year-old Nigerian journalist for This Day newspaper, found herself at the centre of a controversy in 2002 due to a comment she made in a newspaper article about the Miss World beauty pageant. The event was scheduled to take place in Nigeria later that year, and Daniel, who was primarily a fashion writer, addressed the opposition from the Nigerian Muslim community to the pageant in her November 16, 2002, comment piece. In her article, she expressed the viewpoint of some Muslims who deemed it immoral to bring 92 women to Nigeria for a beauty pageant, questioning what the Islamic prophet Muhammad would think. Daniel added a last-minute remark, stating, "In all honesty, he would probably have chosen a wife from one of them. The irony is that Algeria, an Islamic country, is one of the countries participating in the contest." She claimed to have perceived it as "funny and light-hearted" and did not anticipate the serious repercussions it would have. However, the publication of the article quickly escalated into violent religious riots, resulting in over 200 casualties, 1,000 injuries, and 11,000 people left homeless. Despite the newspaper's apology and retraction on the front page, This Day's offices in Kaduna were torched, and its editor, Simon Kolawole, was arrested. In response to the escalating situation, Daniel resigned from her position at the newspaper the day after the article was published. Concerned for her safety and anticipating interrogation by Nigerian state security, Daniel fled the country for the Republic of Benin. The situation took a more ominous turn when, on November 26, 2002, the Islamist government of Zamfara State issued a fatwa against her. The deputy governor of Zamfara, Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi, broadcast a chilling message on local radio, equating Daniel's case to that of Salman Rushdie and urging Muslims to consider her killing as a religious duty. "Like Salman Rushdie, the blood of Isioma Daniel can be shed. It is incumbent on all Muslims wherever they are to consider the killing of the writer as a religious duty," Shinkafi said. While the Nigerian government denounced the fatwa as "unconstitutional" and "null and void," there was a division among Muslim leaders over its validity. Some argued that the subsequent retraction and apology rendered the fatwa inappropriate. Lateef Adegbite, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, rejected the death penalty, emphasising that Daniel was not a Muslim, and the newspaper had publicly apologised. In all, the 2002 Miss World pageant was never held in Abuja. It was moved to London and was won by Turkey's Azra Akin on December 7, 2002. She was crowned by her predecessor, Agbani Darego of Nigeria. Interestingly, no British channel agreed to broadcast the event. It was the first time in 51 years that it was not shown in the UK. #HistoryVille

Will never forgive J. Cole but Future is featured on the album. Criticize Khaled for not saying ‘Free Palestine’ but you’ve never commented on any social issue whatsoever in 19 years of being in the spotlight. Oh but also criticize Kendrick for speaking on social issues. Drake might be an actual fool.
