At this point I just want to be part of a drama-free nerd club.

shooting my shot: I'm dating again! I'm a 31-year old eng in SF, mostly nerdy (into local politics, the economist, a24, Ellsworth Kelly) also reasonably outdoorsy (running, skiing) and I cook you should be a 25-35 guy who wants kids, is intellectually curious, and lacks chest hair

You can think of it like building a house: previously there were architects and builders. Now there are just architects. You still need to think about the plumbing, lighting systems, room layouts, etc. but because you are not building it, the time it takes dramatically compress. How many more houses would we be able to build, if every time an architect finishes a draft, it turns into a building?

i love how people are saying "if we write a sufficiently detailed specification, the agent can write all our code" do you know what writing a sufficiently detailed specification that deterministically maps to what a computer's actions is? it's coding

Once while I’m at home I found my mother’s diary that she kept while I was growing up. Reading it I realized from the moment I was born there was only unbounded love that she had for me. Reading this reminds me of the tenderness and the sadness that comes w impermanence, from someone who truly love you this much. I’m so sorry Jose, I hope that she rests in peace.

I wrote something about the past few days while my mom passed away. It's a tribute to her, my personal memory, and also (even if you don't have any connection to me at all) to satisfy your curiosity about what is it like, to be there during that time.

I discovered early on in our relationship that Chris takes copious notes for everything. He had detailed notes about my likes, dislikes, stories i told him, gift ideas etc since our first date. Now he really benefits from having Claude reads all the context 😂
Chris Lakin@chrislakin

realized I could be using AI to improve my relationships more. gave claude context on my gf and asked for ideas; it suggested tickets to a broadway play so she can make the most of her last few months in nyc. thanks claude

@0xluffy The way I’ve seen people surprise proposed is by e.g. going to the ring shop, says the ring is not ready for 6 months (when it’s actually ready sooner), then proposed inbetween that time.

asking for a friend: how do you propose without her suspecting at all? the moment you ask her to: - go on a trip somewhere nice - get her nails done - wear a nice dress - go on a romantic walk she already knows imo the only way to make it a surprise is to treat her so well all the time that she can’t tell which day is the proposal

Doing the reading is a superpower, and it's even better in a world where "no one" is doing the reading. (Inspired by a conversation I had with some college students.)

I'm in the hospital with my mom who's dying. From here, everything out there seems so unreal, so small, so far away, there's just me and my mom, nothing else exists.

Statistically, if your society isn't starting families at 25 then there's no way to be above replacement. Which means family homes must be affordable at 22, fresh out of university. It seems unimaginable!
Marko Matvikov@MarkoMatvikov

On average, young Aussies want 2-2.5 kids. So our birth rate hasn’t collapsed because we stopped wanting kids. It’s that we’ve made housing as the foundation for building a family an impossible luxury. We need our governments to start treating our declining birth rate as a national priority.

Just got X app and it’s significantly worse than x.com Same for YouTube, Facebook (web > app). The one exception is instagram (app > web) The main reason is that these apps really optimize engagement on the app, so it’s really easy to get suck in. On the web you get a jankier experience, but there is more friction, so it ends up being more manageable.

apparently one of the highest revenue yc companies is a match making app doing like a ~$1m a month in revenue & it’s not a dating app. it uses ai to match women for friendship with other women due to loneliness which is very fascinating because bumble needed to lean into this hardcore but obviously failed in all facets of business for the past like ~6 years. kinda ironic since the zeitgeist narrative from the mainstream is always about men’s loneliness.
