I remember the time I was working for a web3 project and handling their marketing campaign. That role gave me reasons to talk to a lot of marketing agencies and influencers. What shocked me the most with all of them was the uncertainty around their KPIs. Unlike web2 projects that want users to buy their products, visit their stores, etc. One major reason web3 projects do marketing is for visibility for their token, which should result in buyers and holders. So at that time, I used to ask every agency or influencer I spoke to: “How many holders or how much buy volume can you give us that makes it easy for you to name such ridiculous amounts of money?” Then you watch them start shilling, sounding bullish, saying a lot… without actually saying anything. The next thing I would ask was: “If you aren’t certain about your numbers, what’s your take on commission?” You claim you have a cumulative 300k followers across social media. It shouldn’t be hard for you to generate $300k in buy pressure, right? What if that happens after your post — say we give you 5% of that as commission? It’s almost like they’ve all had meetings together. The answers are always the same: “We don’t work on commission. We take payment before working.” Lol. 100% of the time I took the bet on payment before service, it was a failure. I remember a web3 project that trended for spending $50m in a year on marketing… and we still didn’t see the results. So what’s the real issue?
