True contentment lies in understanding the distinction between joy and happiness. Many chase happiness, mistaking it for the ultimate goal. However, happiness is fleeting, tied to external circumstances. It hinges on things going well: an achievement, a kind word, a gift, or material success. It can just as easily disappear when circumstances shift—a disappointment, a failure, or an unexpected hardship can snatch it away. Joy, on the other hand, is something deeper and enduring. It isn’t tied to events or possessions but flows from within. Joy is a state of being, a perspective that transcends the ups and downs of life. Unlike happiness, it doesn’t rely on external validation or favorable conditions. It thrives in the midst of trials, offering a steady sense of peace even when everything around you feels chaotic. Choosing joy is an act of courage. It’s deciding to find gratitude in every moment, no matter how imperfect. Joy isn’t reactive; it’s proactive. It comes from an internal wellspring that remains untouchable by the world’s turbulence. It’s a gift you give yourself—a mindset that refuses to be shaken by circumstances or the actions of others. This doesn’t mean joy denies pain or ignores challenges. Instead, joy sees beyond them, recognizing that life’s difficulties are temporary and often hold opportunities for growth. Joy roots itself in resilience and perspective. It’s the ability to hold onto light when surrounded by darkness. When you understand the difference between joy and happiness, you free yourself from the rollercoaster of external validation. You stop chasing temporary pleasures and start cultivating a mindset that sustains you through life’s complexities. Joy is a choice, a gift, and a mindset. And when you embrace it, it becomes your anchor, regardless of what life throws your way. Ask any trauma survivor: it can be SO hard to actually accept, experience, sit with, or process the experience of being loved or valued. We're waiting for the other shoe to drop. For the big reveal. To realize it was all a scam. We come by those abandonment fears honestly.

I choose trauma recovery because if I have to engage w/ my past, it's gonna be on my terms, at my pace, for my reasons-- not the intrusive, chaotic sh*t show of trauma responses that ruined my life & relationships for years. To be in control, I had to surrender.

"But I CAN'T cut ties w/ them, they raised me." Nothing that happened in the past makes it not-okay for you to set boundaries-- up to & including no contact-- in a relationship that is harmful to you now. "Yeah, but..." Nah. No "but." Your safety & stability NOW matter more.

Trauma survivors are often kind of a paradox: on the one hand, we might SEEM to have a higher tolerance for pain than anyone outside of us can FATHOM-- & on the other hand, we can feel so OVERWHELMINGLY sensitive that a vaguely wrong look can send us into a spiral. Trauma, man.
