1/ #Libraries play a critical role in #workforcedevelopment. They provide welcoming community spaces with computers and Internet access, as well as an array of #careerservices for those seeking a new job or looking to learn a new skill.

#TANF turns 25 next month. What would've happened if it had the same reach as AFDC? The answer: two million more families with kids would've received vital cash assistance to meet their basic needs (think diapers, menstrual hygiene products, winter coats etc.)

So proud of my colleague @michelemmartin! We hear about these experiences with the hiring process from job seekers across many of our research projects @heldrichcenter and no one is more familiar with the root causes and solutions than Michele.

Director of New Start Career Network @michelemmartin shares what she's hearing from people still struggling to find work even as the latest jobs report found that the economy added 559,000 jobs in May. #RuhleReports

Yes--I see this every day. The hiring process does not favor career changers, especially when workers are more readily available, yet we continue to blame workers for not making the change.
Focus Pocus@PupsherLive

Everything @michelemmartin is saying is 100% correct. Companies’ hiring focus tends to be narrow and there’s little support for career changers. Many skills are transferable across industries and positions.

“Imagine seeing a group of nannies and blasting “Learn to code!” at them as life advice. The low-skill label flattens workers to a single attribute, ignoring the capacities they have and devaluing the work they do.” Important piece from @AnnieLowrey. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

Long-term unemployment (6+ months) is financially, emotionally, and socially devastating with serious long-term impacts for individuals, their families, and communities. We are going to see serious scars from this.

When we use social services, we’re not taking a handout. We’re just using services we already paid for with our own taxes. If we want to talk about handouts, let’s talk about the tax breaks given to billionaires. Those are handouts.
