@TracesofTexas Let’s also not forget that Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was caught dressed as a women fleeing the Battle of San Jacinto and ended up selling bubble gum in NYC

After the Battle of the Alamo, Santa Anna couldn't resist crowing. In a message sent back to Mexico City, he sent a glowing account: "The Fortress is now in our power, with its artillery, stores, etc... More than 600 corpses of foreigners were buried in the ditches and intrenchments, and a great many, who had escaped the bayonet of the infantry, fell in the vicinity under the sabres of the cavalry .... We lost about 70 men killed." Nearly everything in Santa Anna's account was a lie, from the number of Alamo defenders (probably less than 200) to their method of burial (their bodies were burned) to the number of Mexicans lost (estimates vary, probably at least 400). But Santa Anna's bragging had the intended effect. Jose M. Ortiz Monasterio, Mexican Secretary of State, responded in a March 22 letter to Santa Anna that couldn't possibly be more obsequious or fawning, wrote: "With pleasure do I sincerely congratulate your Excellency for the brilliant triumph achieved over the perfidious colonists by the national arms under your command. This terrible lesson will be to us fruitful in prosperous results; besides, it will teach the sympathizers among our evil-disposed neighbors not to contend against your military talents, and the valor and decision of the brave soldiers who have covered themselves with honor in an assault so heroic. Providence is propitious to us, and has destined your Excellency to be the savior and preserver of the republic. Glorious with these titles, and ever patriotic, your Excellency has garnished your temples with laurels of unwithering fame." Oops. 😃😉😄😃 The ironic thing is that the letter never reached the "savior and preserver of the republic" because Deaf Smith intercepted it before it got to Santa Anna, which is why we know its contents. "I pulled the trigger and she worked fine. I had watched the others with these guns. I guess I fired her for about fifteen minutes. I think I got one of those Japanese planes. They were diving pretty close to us." ----- Doris "Dorie" Miller, Waco native, hero at Pearl Harbor

Right. Ok, so when I was a kid, for the longest time I was sure ‘’dilemma’ was spelled ‘dilemna.’ Weird, right? But I’ve met other people who thought the same! How ‘bout you?
