Album of the day. When you pull an album from The Blackbyrds off the shelf, it's likely because it feels good outside and you know summer is on the horizon. Then again, it's also because you have a sweet tooth for those warm and fluid jams these brothers were deft at laying down. Famously assembled and mentored by jazz legend Donald Byrd when he taught at Howard University's music department, The Blackbyrds struck a fine balance between sophistication and street funk, blurring the lines between proto-disco soul and jazz fusion of the day while keeping it digestible for all purposes (discotheques, block parties, house parties, love-making sessions, cookouts, and everything else you could think of.) 1974's Flying Start was the band's second Donald Byrd-produced album and it served up more of what they never skimped on: layers upon layers of fiery congas, crisp backbeats, chunky basslines, wah-wah guitars, funky clavinet, and wavy synth flourishes topped off by stacked vocals and great brass solos. Best known for its feel-good classic, "Walking in Rhythm," you can't miss its other rare groove treasures like "Blackbyrds' Theme," the ridiculously smooth "Love is Love," "The Baby," "Future Children, Future Hopes," and my all-time favorite two-stepper, "April Showers." This whole album radiates with funk and joy just as buoyant cover shot of the sextet captures.
