My book ‘The Great Game: Afghanistan, British India and the Hundred Year War For India’s Northern Frontier’ is now at No. 5 in the Global Bestsellers list in its category on Amazon. And in good company. See: amazon.com/Great-Game-Afg…

The British did not *conquer it fair and square; they grabbed the Kohinoor from Maharaja Duleep Singh, with whose family they had a decade old treaty of friendship, and not just that they literally kidnapped the boy and shipped him off to London!

@arash_tehran Surprising...British conquered it fair and square IMO and it hardly belonged to the people of the subcontinent in the first place it was merely the private possession of some aloof and distant royalty

The killer's name is Gurjant Singh. He was last seen in his town after the double homicide and since then nothing is known. It seems like something much more obscure/disquieting; it doesn't seem like a simple feud over gurdwara (also coz that's small complex not huge)

timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/europe/t… **More details** on the double murder of two Indian nationals outside a gurudwara in Covo, Bergamo, Italy. I am in touch with the Carbinieri investigating this crime who have told me that:- Three Indian nationals are under investigation for the double homicide Two Indian nationals handed themselves in to police on 18th April. They were questioned and released. They are Sukhjinder Singh, known as “Kala”, and Dhillion Yovanpreet Singh. The main suspect, also an Indian national, who fired the shots is still at large. All three are from Antegnate. ALSO It turns out the Antegnate faction was feuding with Rajinder Singh, a former president, over control of the temple. All three suspects worshipped at the same gurudwara as Rajinder and Gurmit, who were shot dead.

But, I find the whole Kohinoor issue to be a dead letter. Who should it be returned to? India, Pakistan and Afghanistan all have some sort of claim to it. Even the United Kingdom is (sort of) a successor state to the British Indian Empire. Just keep it and be happy. Give it to Trump.

There were other avenues for satisfying the concerns of each communal constituency. Partition was the worst possible solution. I can especially say this as a scholar of the ‘Great Game’ - the aim wasn’t to satisfy anyone inside India, but to create a geopolitical system for controlling the region: you can see how it’s playing out now.

@sialgoraya As an East Punjabi whose 100% family has always lived in East Punjab (thus didn't need to migrate from West Punjab), I consider myself a beneficiary of Partition. Can't forget the sense of shock and then relief I felt on seeing 1941 census figures of my home town for 1st time
