Last evening, I had the opportunity to join Kenneth Anderson Lukwago on Radio One’s talk show, “The Spectrum,” where we discussed the @UCC_Official media guidelines ahead of the upcoming elections. I emphasised that @UCC_Official aims to create a professional and law-abiding media environment. “We’re not here to 'squeeze' the media,” I stated, “but to ensure compliance for the good of our country.” I addressed concerns about our restrictions on live streaming during incidents of violence, urging media houses to implement a "delay mechanism" to prevent broadcasting inflammatory content. I highlighted that the media does not have the authority to tally or declare electoral results; that responsibility lies solely with the Electoral Commission. I called on media practitioners to report responsibly to avoid spreading misinformation. I also reassured listeners regarding rumours of a potential internet shutdown, confirming that @UCC_Official has no directive to switch off the internet and urging citizens to use it wisely. Additionally, I clarified that the American-based service provider Starlink is unlicensed in Uganda, and we anticipate resolving this issue within the next six months. I reiterated that @UCC_Official operates on behalf of the Ugandan people, balancing media freedom with national security, and welcomed anyone who feels @UCC_Official has exceeded its authority to voice their concerns. My goal is to foster a collaborative media environment that serves all Ugandans.
