From the defiant uprising at Agia Lavra, through the heroic sacrifices of the War of Independence (1821–1829) that formed the modern Greek state, Greece pressed onward: liberating Thessaly in 1881, then decisively dominating the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913 by liberating Thessaloniki, most of Macedonia, Crete, and the Aegean islands while the Greek navy crippled Ottoman supply lines. Greece was not a mere participant-it was the decisive catalyst that liberated the Balkans and redrew Europe’s map in the name of freedom.
