woman: i am a victim of rape and find pap smears, no less the average gynecology visit, extremely triggering twitter: Oh my GOD you dumb fucking bitch my mom died of cervical cancer and now it’ll happen to YOU [insert you people can’t do anything image]
Christina@forestofcake

People take risks with their health all the time, but nothing turns twitter into a fascist rally like a woman who's scared of a pap smear. Apparently the best way to deal with this every time is to be dogpiled by women screaming at you that you will 100% die horribly.

Obviously its important to get a pap smear, but the amount of people who shut down any stories of women experiencing pain during smear tests and accuse them of exagerrating is a blatant example of medical misogyny.

If someone is anxious about a medical procedure, isn't the right thing to do to approach them with empathy? Or does that just go out the window when its women?

@baldrandyorton i think upset was the wrong word and i understand what you mean, it's just hard seeing people trying to advocate for themselves and express that pap smears are scary and painful and instead of being met with compassion theyre met with tons of people acting like they want cancer

@silkwormsurgeon don’t remember coming off as “upset” by any means. the unfortunate reality of the medical industry disregarding women’s pain shouldn’t stop anyone from taking the necessary precautionary measures against potentially terminal diseases.

@silkwormsurgeon it’s not “aggressive” (interesting) to acknowledge that while things can and should change and we should advocate for that change in the medical industry, in the mean time you will just have to put up with a possibly deeply upsetting experience in the name of your health.

@oncebitcore @baldrandyorton okay??? that doesnt add anything to the conversation that we should approach trauma survivors who are scared of pap smears with less judgement and more empathy and understanding instead of saying omg get over yourself you want fucking cancer

@self1shm4chine they're very obviously just saying that we should be less aggressive towards people who are scared of pap smears. like every time someone says theyre terrified of getting one the response is always like are you fucking stupid do you want fucking cancer

@suburbantaygend the end goal is people not telling women that their fear of pap smears is irrational and stupid especially considering that 1 in 5 women are rape victims let's think about it

I guess I just don’t fully understand what the end goal of this is like do they want doctors to invent a new way of swabbing your cervix or are they hoping that someone will tell them that pap smears actually aren’t that important bc both are very unlikely to happen so now what

this conversation is so interesting to me bc like ok let’s say the entire world fully acknowledges that pap smears can trigger certain traumas… you’ll still need to get one at some point tho so where do we go from here
Project Hayle(s) Mary ☀️🌟@bulbasaurbian

Pap smears are what sent me to therapy because of my medical trauma as a baby i hadn’t processed so maybe we should be more cognizant of how we approach the trauma some people experience.
