Finally, a big name has the courage to tell it: we are nowhere near AGI. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and Nobel laureate for AlphaFold, put it neat and clear: "Today's systems are nowhere near [AGI]. Doesn't matter how many Erdős problems you solve… I think it's far, far from what a true invention, or someone like Ramanujan, would have been able to do." This is the elephant in the room that many AI enthusiasts prefer not to see, or are actively trying to hide. Erdős problems are well defined, often combinatorial, on finite spaces. They are exactly the kind of problems on which current AI can achieve spectacular performance with a lot of compute and knowledge. A neural network can search a huge graph of possibilities. It can recombine existing knowledge at unprecedented scale. It can discover surprising solutions inside an already defined conceptual space. But true invention is something else. True invention is not only solving a problem. It is inventing new objects, new dimensions, new connections. It is inventing new problems. From resolving to inventing there is a discontinuity that we don't know how to bridge. We are making extraordinary tools. But we are nowhere close to AGI.

So the US policy of taking Russia’s side and trying to force Ukraine to surrender to occupation and slaughter has stagnated thanks to the fierce resistance of Ukrainians and their allies in Europe. Good.

NEW!! Sec Rubio tells me Ukraine peace efforts ‘stagnated,’ U.S. ready to mediate if talks progress Washington does not want to “waste time” on unproductive diplomacy after renewed strikes, but remains open to helping broker a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv, Rubio says 👇

As I’ve said since that first Trump term, we may never know why Trump is so loyal to Putin. Bribery? Blackmail? Affinity for dictators & oligarchs? KGB asset? All of the above? More important is stopping him, because if he were a Russian agent, what would he do differently?
Jim Sciutto@jimsciutto

Trump has been threatening such reductions to a number of European and Asian allies going back to his first term. This particular announcement comes the same day he spoke with Putin - and it’s a development Russia would certainly welcome.

Whatever you think of this war, if this doesn’t give you goosebumps, you have never experienced tyranny and the universal euphoria a promise of freedom holds. All can still go very wrong but the joy and power of hope can be reality-shifting.

The animating force behind the American Right today is hatred of immigrants (the Other) and foreigners more generally. In service of that hate they are wiling to have masked, armed thugs with Federal badges roam American neighborhoods -- harass, intimidate and sometimes kill Americans. They are eager to see hard working immigrants hide away, or leave the country. Happy to see brilliant scientists and engineers (non-white) walk (fly) away. They are happy to pay higher taxes (tariffs) on the goods they buy. Overjoyed to see the very idea of America (Individualism, individual-rights) trampled underfoot in the name of blood and soil. Hate is a powerful emotion. When it becomes the guide to action, freedom and liberty are easily sacrificed.

You know that feeling when you look at old images of Nazis, with their totenkopfs and swastikas and black uniforms, and wonder: ”How could anyone convince themselves that these were the good guys?” Well…

Trump applying stronger sanctions on the genocidal Russian dictatorship, an active enemy of the US and its allies? No, he’s raising taxes on Americans to punish European allies over the vast irrelevancy of Greenland in order to destroy NATO to benefit Russia.
Republicans against Trump@RpsAgainstTrump

JUST IN: Trump says he will impose a 10% tariff on on goods sent to the U.S. from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland on Feb. 1, rising to 25% on June 1, “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

Evolution produced many wondrous things - especially human minds - but it did not produce the F-22. And likely could not produce it, even in ten trillion years. And it’s not because it’s complex. It’s actually much, much simpler than a cell. It’s because reaching this point in design space is probably unreachable by: 1. Changing only a few genes at a time 2. Requiring every individual to meet strict criteria of survival and reproduction It might be possible for *humans* to design a strand of DNA that constructs an advanced fighter jet. And that would be partly because, unlike evolution, we wouldn’t destroy our failed attempts along the way, but save and learn from them. Humans can make arbitrarily sophisticated changes to a genome - things which never happened in evolution. And we don’t require every step in our problem-solving process to meet any fixed criteria. However bad the idea, we can keep it and learn from it. In other words, evolution does variation and selection, but humans do it better. Our variations, our steps in design space, are more sophisticated. Our selection criteria are richer and more flexible, less restrictive. In other words, a raptor can evolve, but a Raptor must be designed.
